Wisdom and Compassion – Introduction to the Basics of Buddhist Philosophy

Dominique Thomas will introduce us to the basic philosophical approaches to Buddhism this week.

The morning will be devoted to ‘Interdependent Arising and the Meaning of Emptiness’. The 12 links of interdependent arising will be used to show how our mind works, how it perceives and how it interprets. It is this perception and interpretation that limits us and leads to non-wholesome actions. Understanding these processes helps us to gain distance so that we can act more responsibly and coherently.

The afternoons are dedicated to the theme ‘A Path of Liberation’. The Buddha invites us to question our habits, prejudices and assumptions and to confront our dissatisfaction and sense of deprivation. With the help of examples from everyday life, we take up the guiding principle underlying the Buddha’s teachings. In this way, it becomes possible for us to understand how our mind can evolve towards liberation and how our confused and self-centred view can change into benevolent kindness and wisdom of heart.

For the morning teachings, it is an advantage to already be familiar with the basics of the Buddhist view. The afternoon teachings are open to all. It is good to attend all parts of the topic you have chosen.
